C&S at 100: Lagos CAN Urges Church to Reaffirm Mandate, Embrace Reform.

The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has called on the Cherubim and Seraphim Church to shed confusing practices and re-emphasise its founding mandate of holiness, healing, and contextual worship as it celebrates its centenary.

Delivering a lecture titled “Cherubim and Seraphim at 100: Critical Assessment of its Mandate, Impact, and Future Trajectory” on Monday, Adegbite stressed that the church’s future relevance depends on its faithfulness to its divine mandate while courageously engaging the challenges of a changing world.

He reminded the congregation that every authentic move of God begins with a mandate:

Holiness: symbolised by the white garment, which represents purity of heart and life.

Healing: At a time when colonial medicine could not address African realities, Orimolade emphasised the healing power of God through prayer, fasting, and anointing.

Contextual Worship: affirming that Christianity is not foreign to Africa through Yoruba hymns, African drumming, open-air services, and prophetic prayer.

Adegbite described the C&S Church at 100 as “a testimony of God’s faithfulness and African Christian resilience,” but urged the church to reform in order to remain relevant.

He challenged the leadership to strengthen theological education through seminaries and Bible schools, embrace digital evangelism for the younger generation, and harness its diaspora presence as a bridge between African spirituality and global Christianity.

“Nigeria bleeds from corruption, poverty, and injustice,” Adegbite said. “A renewed C&S must speak prophetically to society, embodying Isaiah’s vision: ‘Here am I, send me’ (Isaiah 6:8).”
